My first digital painting finally felt like mine after 14 tries
I have been messing around with a cheap drawing tablet for about six months, mostly doing quick sketches that never made it past my hard drive. Last week I decided to actually finish one piece, a small portrait of my dog, and I kept redoing the lighting over and over until it clicked on the 14th attempt. The big surprise was that using a simple custom brush instead of the default round one made all the difference, and it looked way more textured than I expected. I learned that slowing down and reworking the same layer, not adding more layers, was what helped me finally get the shadows right. Has anyone else found that one setting or brush that just unlocked their style for you?

Switching off the default round brush was huge for me too, I messed with a chalk style brush for weeks before it felt right. What really got me was turning down the brush opacity instead of fighting with layer modes all the time, the shadows just built up softer that way. Sticking with one layer is brave though, I always chicken out and make ten.
