My comic panel colors looked flat for three years until I tried a trick from a friend
I started drawing a web comic back in 2021 and always colored my panels with flat fills. Last week, my friend Sam came over, looked at my work, and said 'try adding a gradient overlay set to multiply on a separate layer.' I did it on a cityscape panel, just a simple blue to purple from top to bottom. The depth it added was crazy. Has anyone found other simple layer tricks that make a big difference?

That "simple blue to purple" trick is a game changer. I tried to draw a sunset once and it looked like a toddler's fridge art. Flat orange blob, flat yellow blob. Then I saw someone add a soft light layer with a faint pink near the horizon. Suddenly it had that warm, end of day glow. It's wild how one little layer can turn a drawing into a real picture.
