A retired city planner in Portland showed me his 1987 bus map and it made me rethink our whole bus stop layout
Our design community transport group kept arguing about adding more shelters on 5th Ave, so I dug up a 1987 transit map from a retired planner in Portland and noticed the old stops were spaced about 3 blocks apart, not 2. We tried that wider spacing on one route as a test and wait times actually dropped because buses weren't braking so often. Has anyone else looked at old transit maps before jumping into a redesign?
Wider spacing might cut wait times on paper but it also means more walking for old folks and anyone hauling groceries. That 1987 map was drawn for a city that looked nothing like Portland does now. Seems like you're solving driver friction by dumping the cost onto riders.
