Vent: My kid's smartwatch got hacked and I had to lock it down

My son's cheap smartwatch started getting weird text messages from a number we didn't know last month. I looked it up and found out the default password on the app was just '123456'. I changed it to a long, random one I saved in my password manager and turned off the location sharing feature in the settings. Has anyone else had to deal with securing one of these kids' gadgets?

Wait, was it a software update that bricked it? I heard that's been happening a lot lately.
