Turned down a free VPN for months, then a coffee shop proved me wrong
I've always been that person who rolls their eyes at free VPN offers, figured they were all selling data or slowing my connection to a crawl. But three weeks ago I was at a Starbucks in Austin trying to check my bank app on their public wifi, and the page wouldn't load past the login screen. My buddy who works in IT just laughed and said try my free VPN, it's Proton's basic tier. I downloaded it right there, connected to a server in Dallas, and everything loaded instantly, no lag, no sketchy pop-ups. Turns out the issue was the coffee shop's router blocking certain banking traffic, not my phone. I still pay for my own paid service at home, but for travel situations that free tier has honestly saved me twice since then. Has anyone else found a legit free security tool that surprised them after you'd written it off?

proton's free tier is surprisingly solid, i used it on a layover in chicago last month and it handled everything fine. that whole catching banking traffic thing at coffee shops is real, scared me enough to keep one installed now. sometimes the free version is just fine for basic stuff.
