Rant: That IT guy at my small business was dead wrong about VPNs

He told me a free VPN would protect all my devices on public WiFi until I got a $200 charge on my card after using one at a coffee shop in Austin. Turned out that 'free' service was selling my data the whole time. Has anyone else had a 'security expert' give advice that backfired hard?

Buddy of mine used a "free" VPN at a Vegas hotel and came home to find his Netflix account logged into from Russia the next day. Took him a week and three calls to fix it.
