My home network used to be a mess until I mapped it out on a whiteboard

About three months ago, I realized I had over 30 devices connected to my wifi in Austin, from smart bulbs to old tablets. I drew a simple map of everything on a whiteboard and found a smart plug I forgot about that was still on its default password. After I changed that and set up a guest network for visitors, the random slowdowns I had every evening just stopped. Has anyone else done something like this to clean up their home setup?

Check the signal strength of each device on your map. I found an old wireless printer in my basement that was barely holding onto the wifi, constantly trying to reconnect and clogging the whole network. Moving it closer to the router or just turning it off when not needed made a huge difference.

My neighbor's smart fridge kept dropping connection and slowed our whole building's internet down last month.
