My friend in Phoenix said his bank account got drained after he clicked a text about a late package

I'm convinced that SMS phishing is the biggest threat to normal folks now, not some fancy malware, so what's the best way to spot a fake text before you click?

Check the sender first. A lot of those texts come from weird email addresses, not a real phone number. And they always try to make you panic about a package or a bank alert.

Totally agree, that panic about a package is the biggest red flag. My cousin got one saying a delivery failed and it looked so real, but the link was just a bunch of random letters. I mean, if a real company texts you, they usually say your name or give an order number, not just a scary link.
