My cousin told me his password was 'password123' because 'nobody would guess it'...

This was at a family BBQ in Austin last summer, and I had to explain why that's the first thing a script tries. Anyone else have a story about a simple security mistake that just made you shake your head?

Yeah, that "puzzle for friends" line from @richardp19 is so true. It's like people imagine a hacker is a person sitting there guessing, not a program. I see it with my parents writing their PIN on a note in their wallet, or using the same simple password for everything. They just don't get that the threat isn't a curious person, it's a machine doing the work.

How many times have you seen someone use their pet's name or birthday as a password? It feels like a lot of people treat security like a puzzle for friends, not for hackers with automated tools. They pick something easy to remember, forgetting that a computer can try a million common words in a second. It's the same mindset that makes people hide a spare key under the doormat.
