Ignoring the 2FA backup code warning bit me at the worst time
My buddy Dave who does IT work for a living kept telling me to save those backup codes somewhere offline last year. I figured it was overkill since my phone never leaves my pocket, you know how it goes. Then last month my phone took a swim in a puddle at the Portland airport and died on the spot. I tried logging into my email on my laptop, got the 2FA prompt, and realized I had zero access. Took me 4 days, a new SIM card, and a very awkward support call to prove I was me. Dave's advice was 100% right, I just never thought the phone would be the thing that broke. Has anyone else gotten locked out by a dead device and found a backup method that actually worked?

Wait, you couldn't just pull the SIM and pop it in an old phone? I keep a cheap backup handset in a drawer for exactly this. Print the codes though, phones die but paper doesn't.
