Coworker made me realize my backup plan was garbage

I was talking to Dave from accounting last week about how I store all my photos on an external drive. He asked where else I kept them and I said nowhere. He just stared at me for a second and said 'so if your house floods or that drive dies, you lose everything from the last ten years?' That hit different because last month my brother's laptop died and he lost all his kid's baby pictures. I spent the weekend setting up a cloud backup and now I sleep better. Anyone else have that moment where you realized your system was basically nothing?

Oh man, this is literally me last year. I had all my photos since college on one external drive and thought I was being so smart. Then I dropped it getting out of my car and it made this awful clicking noise. I almost had a heart attack. Spent like two days using recovery software and thankfully got most of it back but yeah, I have three backups now - cloud, another external, and I even put the really important stuff on a flash drive in my desk at work. Your mileage may vary but that one close call changed everything for me.

Whoa, slow down there @oliviapatel - three backups? That seems like a lot honestly. I mean yeah, losing photos would suck but is it really life or death? I've got all my stuff on one drive and just hope for the best. Maybe I'm naive but I can't be bothered with all that backup chaos.
