PSA: booked the inside cabin over the balcony for our 7 night Alaska run and it was the best $400 I have ever kept in my pocket
My wife and I went back and forth for about two weeks on this one. The balcony on a 7 night Glacier Bay sailing out of Seattle was running $400 more per person, and I kept picturing coffee out there at sunrise. We picked the inside cabin on deck 8 instead, mainly because we wanted the extra cash for the floatplane trip in Ketchikan and a second night in Seattle before we sailed. Turns out we barely missed it. The ship had a covered viewing deck at the front with real chairs, and the naturalist did a running talk there while the ice was calving, which was way better than standing alone on a tiny balcony. My wife pointed out that we were up on deck at 6am anyway both glacier mornings, so the balcony would have sat empty. We spent the saved money on the crab feast in Juneau and still came home with some left. The one thing I would say is the inside cabin gets pitch dark, so set a phone alarm if you want to catch a sunrise. Curious if anyone here has done a Hubbard Glacier day from a balcony, because I keep wondering if I missed something.
