Two years of nightly tapping before I found the source

My upstairs neighbor denied making any noise for 22 months, turns out it was a loose vent flap rattling every time their furnace kicked on at 3am. I recorded it 47 times on my phone before they finally let me check their utility closet, has anyone else had a neighbor swear they're innocent when it's clearly their house making the racket?
