Had to choose between confronting my neighbor or calling animal control about the weird sounds

Last month I heard scratching and muffled cries from my neighbor's shed at 3 AM, and I couldn't tell if it was a trapped animal or something worse. I went with calling animal control first, but they showed up the next day and found nothing while the neighbor glared at me from his window. Would you have knocked on their door or gone straight to the pros with something like this?

That's a tough call, and honestly I used to think you should always knock first and talk it out like a decent person. But then a neighbor's weird late-night noises turned out to be him running an illegal dogfighting operation (which I learned the hard way after months of trying to be neighborly). So now I say call the pros every time, because you just never know what's behind that door and your safety matters more than politeness.

lol yeah you definitely made the right call. i had a similar thing a few years back where my neighbor's garage would light up at 2am and there was this weird whining sound. i tried knocking a couple times and he just said "fixing my motorcycle" but the next week a possum crawled out of his garage half dead. turns out he was hoarding sick animals back there. animal control found like 40 cats and raccoons in cages after i finally called. that neighbor glare is brutal but honestly better than finding out you walked into something dangerous. safety first every time, politeness can get you hurt.
