That moment during my nanowrimo event when my laptop crashed and I lost 12,000 words of my novel made me a firm believer in cloud backups

I was at a coffee shop in Portland at 2am, finally hitting the climax of chapter 18, when the screen went black and I realized I had been saving everything to the desktop for a month, so now I start every writing session by hitting Ctrl+S into Google Docs before I even type a single word.

The real hidden danger nobody talks about is how cloud backups can actually screw you over if you're not careful. I had a friend who backed everything up to the cloud, then her account got hacked and the hacker deleted everything, including the backup history. Now she uses a USB stick and emails herself the file every night. Its the paranoid but effective approach lol.

Wait, did that delete the whole backup history including version history? I swear I read somewhere that Google Drive keeps deleted files for 30 days in the trash, but maybe that's just for regular accounts (not hacked ones).
