Stop starting every story with 'It was a dark and stormy night'
I used to do that garbage too until a workshop leader in Brooklyn told me to just drop the reader into the middle of the action. Try starting with a character already running or a sentence of dialogue. Has anyone else found a specific opener that always works?

Got a buddy who started a short story with "The elevator stopped between floors." Just that, nothing else. It hooked me hard and made me want to know what happens next. Simple but effective, man.

Read somewhere that Hemingway started a whole story with just "For sale: baby shoes never worn.
