Serious question, do you outline your whole novel first or just start writing?

I spent 6 months outlining my fantasy book, but my friend in Austin just dives in and says planning kills the magic. Which method actually works better for finishing a draft?

Honestly, just setting a tiny daily word goal got me out of that loop. Wrote 200 words a day no matter what, even if they were bad. The outline filled itself in by the end of week two.
