Paid $40 for a beat sheet template, ended up using a blank page
I bought a fancy beat sheet template from a writer's site and it was just a bunch of boxes I could've sketched myself. Honestly, the free ones I found on Pinterest had more detail. Has anyone else overpaid for something like that and found the simple route works better?

The real issue might be that templates force your story into their shape instead of the other way around. A blank page makes you wrestle with what actually happens, while a beat sheet just gives you a false sense of progress. The money spent is less about the template itself and more about thinking you needed permission to start writing. Once you realize the structure lives in your head anyway, the boxes become pointless. Did the paid one at least teach you what you don't need?
