A guy at a Madison coffee shop handed me a napkin with 3 words on it and it fixed my whole prompt habit
I was stuck on a short story for 2 weeks, rewriting the same opening line over and over at a table in Madison. The guy next to me saw me crossing stuff out and asked what I was working on. I told him I kept writing prompts for myself that were way too open, like 'write about loss' or 'write about a stranger.' He grabbed my napkin and wrote 'she lost the keys.' That was it. Three words, one object, and I had 900 words done that night. Now every prompt I write for myself has a person and a thing they can hold, never a feeling. How specific do you all get when you build your own prompts, do you name the object or leave it open?
