Warning: Bad rigging info going around on job sites

I overheard two guys at a supply yard in Phoenix last week talking about using old crane cable for chokers, saying it was fine as long as it looked okay. That stuff can hide internal damage that snaps under load, I seen a near miss once from exactly that. Have any of you dealt with guys spreading unsafe rigging shortcuts on your sites?

Nah, people blow this stuff way out of proportion.

I mean, I see what you're getting at, but I gotta push back a little on that one. I think there's a difference between someone being lazy and someone just not knowing any better. A lot of guys learn rigging from their dads or uncles who did it 30 years ago, and back then the rules were way looser. I've talked to old timers who swear that a visual check and a tap test was all they ever did. That doesn't make it right, but it's not always malicious, it's just bad info being passed down.
