Vent: Site super in Charlotte pulled my load chart because I used a different hand signal
Was running a 50 ton Grove on the 277 extension job last Tuesday. My oiler and I have our own system, little point and circle motion for boom up. Super comes over, says it's not in the OSHA book, makes me stop for 20 minutes while he prints out the official chart. I've been doing this 14 years, never had a drop. We all got our own shorthand on site, right? Or is everyone else dealing with micromanagers who think the book is the only way? How do you handle supers breathing down your neck over stuff that just works?

Wait, are you actually arguing that personal shorthand should trump the written standard on a crane site? Because that's exactly how guys end up in the accident report, not the OSHA handbook. I've seen two riggers get fired for "their own system" when one wrong signal meant a load swung into a live power line. The super's job is to protect you from yourself, even if it feels like babysitting. Yeah, it sucks waiting 20 minutes for a printout, but that printout is what covers your license when something goes sideways. You've had 14 years clean, but that's luck plus habit, and habits change when you're tired or rushed. The book isn't perfect, but it's the one language every guy on a multi-crew site actually shares.
