Twenty years in and I just figured out my hand signals were backwards

I was working a job in Portland last summer on a 200-ton crawler. This new oiler kept giving me the slow down sign when I needed boom up. After the third time I stopped and asked him what he was doing. Turns out I had been mixing up my hand signals since I started in 2005. Now I double check with every new hand before the lift starts. Has anyone else had a moment where you realized you were doing something basic COMPLETELY wrong for years?

Hold on, backwards might be the right way. If your oiler knew what you actually wanted, and you got the job done, then the signals worked fine. Hand signals are just a tool for communication, and if both of you understand the system, it doesn't matter if it's technically flipped. The only real problem was you never told the guy your version.

Oh man, I once spent a year waving left when I meant right.
