The time I found out how much cable those big tower cranes actually hold blew my mind

I was killing time the other week reading the manual for a Liebherr 550 tower crane we had on a site in Phoenix, and I stumbled on the cable specs. Turns out that drum can hold something like 1,200 feet of hoist cable depending on the diameter you pick. I had to double check it because that's longer than three football fields laid end to end. Nobody ever talks about that stuff when you're just running the boom day to day. Anyone else ever look up the actual cable length on their rig and get surprised?

Wait, the drum on those big Liebherr cranes can really hold twelve hundred feet of cable? That's almost a quarter mile of steel rope just sitting on one spool. Makes you think differently about how much work that little drum actually does every day.

And I heard somewhere that some of those crane cables have a breaking strength over 100,000 pounds, which is wild when you're standing there watching it lift a load. Really puts the safety margins into perspective.
