That time I called BS on a leveling trick and ate my words
Old timer at the yard in Chicago told me to use a 5 gallon bucket of water instead of a laser level for a tricky pad setup. I laughed it off until I tried it on a muddy site where my laser kept giving bad readings. Any of you guys got a weird low-tech trick that actually works better than the fancy gear?

3 years back in Denver I was pouring footings for a deck and my string level kept slipping. Some old mason told me to take a length of clear vinyl tubing, fill it with water, and pinch the ends. Damn thing worked perfect even in the wind and rain. I still use that trick for rough grade work where a laser is just gonna get knocked around.

Don't you love how the OLD ways always win when the fancy stuff fails? It's like a law of the universe that the simplest fix always holds up better than the high tech version.
