That outrigger pad failure at the Port of Tacoma site

I always figured the ground crew had the cribbing situation handled, so I never double-checked the mat placement before setting up. Took me 6 hours to get a 50-ton pick unstuck after the pad sank into soft fill that looked solid from the cab. Do you guys walk the site yourself every time or do you trust the signal guy's call on ground conditions?

The last time I walked a site before the signal guy gave me the all clear, I burned 45 minutes pacing around fill that ended up being fine. That 50 ton pick sank because the ground crew had already set the cribbing on a base that shifted, not because nobody checked it. If you trust the signal guy to manage the lift sequence, you might as well trust him on the ground, that's literally his job.
