Rigger's comment on my hoist brake made me recheck everything

I used to trust the brake pads until the load slipped 2 feet at a job in Tulsa. A veteran rigger told me to always check the hydraulic fluid before anything else, turns out low fluid was the real cause. Now I check the reservoir every Monday morning, anyone else do the same?

So did that vet tell you how often you should be bleeding the lines too, or just keeping an eye on the fluid level? I've seen guys top it off and miss air in the system, which sneaks up on you the same way.
