Rant: Old timer told me my hand signals were lazy, changed my whole day

This old crane hand named Frank at the Port of Seattle yard called me out for just pointing and nodding instead of using proper hand signals. He was right, I was cutting corners and it could have gotten someone hurt. Now I do the full arm signals every time, even for small moves. Has anyone else had a salty vet call them out on something basic?

Three years ago at the Port of Seattle I saw a guy get his hand crushed because someone gave a lazy signal on a container lift. @miaa41, I get the whole grateful for a wake up call thing, but sometimes I wonder if folks make it sound more dramatic than it is. Its not that serious if you point instead of doing a full arm pump, you just look like a slacker not a danger to everyone. Frank probably just wanted to feel important for a minute.

Oh man, has this ever happened to me, my old supervisor at the dock chewed me out for skipping the full stop signal and just waving my hand around like it was nothing? He said I was gonna get someone crushed, and he was totally right, so now I make damn sure every arm motion is textbook perfect even if it feels slow. That stern talking-to honestly made me a safer worker, and I'm kind of grateful for it even though it stung at the time (you know how those salty guys can be).
