Overheard a rigger say he never checks hook block weights
Was waiting on a load at a site in Tacoma last Tuesday and caught two riggers talking. One said he just eyeballs the hook block weight and adds a few hundred pounds to be safe. I always use the chart from the manufacturer, but he had 20 years on me. Made me wonder if I'm being too cautious with my load calculations. Anyone else run into guys who do it by feel, and how do you handle it when you're sharing a crane?

Gotta admit, I've done the "eyeball plus 200" thing myself once. Naturally, that was the day the block was heavier than I guessed and the load chart said I was over by a hair. Now I just tell the guys I'm too lazy to argue, so I pull out the chart and make them watch me check it.
