Old tower crane hand signals vs radio headsets - which is safer on a tight site?

Last week on a job across from a hospital downtown, my spotter and I couldn't hear each other over jackhammering even with radios. We fell back to hand signals, but the crane was blocked by a low roof half the time. Three years ago I worked a site in Chicago where radios saved us from a swing collision with a tower next door. So which do you guys trust more when visibility and noise both suck?

Did you guys already have the radio on a wired headset or just the speaker box clipped to your vest?

@the_dylan yeah that speaker box clipped to the vest was brutal, honestly felt for you guys.
