Foreman told me my swing was jerky, so I changed one thing with my hands
About six months back I was running a 60 ton on a tilt up job over in Garland and the foreman walked up during a pick and just watched me for a minute. After I set the panel down he said flat out, "your swing is jerky, you're fighting the controls instead of reading them." I didn't like hearing it but he was right, I was gripping the levers too hard and making little corrections the whole way around instead of one smooth move. So the next day I started doing something specific: before every swing I look at where the load needs to land, then I ease the lever over and let the momentum carry it, barely touching it after that. Took about a shift and a half to stop over-correcting, and the load stopped swinging past the mark. My stops got cleaner too because I started slowing down early instead of waiting until the last second and jamming it. Funny thing is the tag line guy noticed before I did, he said I stopped yanking him around on the walk. Now I warm up with a few empty swings every morning to get the feel before we start picking. Any of you ever had someone call out your control style like that, and what did you actually change?
