20 years running cranes and just realized I was gripping the levers wrong

Been on crawlers since 2004, mostly in Houston. Last week we had a spotter on a tight pick between two buildings and he told me I was overcorrecting every swing. Turns out I've been holding the levers with my thumbs wrapped OVER the top the whole time. He said try thumbs along the side, like you're holding a glass of water. I tried it and suddenly my movements were half as jerky. My co-worker laughed and said he noticed it back in 2018 but figured I knew something he didn't. Who else has had some old habit they carried for years that a total rookie caught? What else am I missing that everyone's too polite to mention?
