That quiet stretch on Route 9 in Vermont gave me a weird feeling
Last month I drove through a small town near Bennington on Route 9 and noticed every single speed limit sign was brand new, like zero rust, but the road itself was crumbling. There were no crews out, no cones, nothing, just fresh signs spaced exactly a mile apart. I pulled over to check the back of one and there was a tiny engraving with a code that didn't match any state DOT markings I've seen. Has anyone else spotted stuff like this on rural highways, or am I reading too much into some basic maintenance?

And you start noticing that kind of thing once you pay attention, like how every new streetlight in my town has a little serial number stamped on the base that nobody ever explains. It's almost like there's a whole separate layer of stuff going on with infrastructure that we're just not meant to see the point of.
