PSA: Had to pick between a 1990s tabloid story and a 2010s YouTube video for a debate club topic.
Went with the tabloid one about Elvis being a secret agent, which was a mistake. My partner just kept yelling about lizard people the whole time. Anyone have a solid, weird topic that's actually debatable?

Honestly, bell.emma is right about picking a topic with real stuff to look at. The lizard people thing happens when you pick a story that's just too out there. Try debating if Bigfoot is real, because there are actual blurry photos and footprint casts to argue about.

Disagree with you there, @the_logan. The lizard people thing actually has more going for it than Bigfoot if you dig into the actual history. There's a whole bunch of old news articles about the reptilian bloodlines in the British royal family and David Icke's 1991 book that started it all, which is a real document you can read. You can compare his claims to actual interviews he gave and see how the story changed over time. With Bigfoot you're stuck arguing over the same grainy Patterson-Gimlin film from 1967, that gets old fast. The lizard people conspiracy has more layers to peel back than a blurry ape in the woods.

What's the actual debate format? If you need something weird but solid, try "Was the moon landing faked?" It's got tons of evidence on both sides, so you can't just yell. Avoid anything that invites pure conspiracy rants, that's where you went wrong. Pick a topic with real documents and photos to argue over, not just wild stories.
