Pro tip: that guy at the hardware store who idles by the key cutting machine
Had an older fella lean in close last Tuesday while I was waiting for a key copy and whisper that those store-made keys warp after six months, then he pointed at some crack in the plastic casing. He said he used to work for a locksmith and told me to only get keys cut from a proper shop that uses brass blanks. Anyone else run into random people dropping weird insider warnings like that?

Oh I totally buy what that old guy said. I had a key from a big box store snap clean in half after about eight months, just from normal use in my door lock. The metal was thin and felt cheap compared to the ones from the actual locksmith down the street. I know some people say it's fine for a while but why risk getting locked out over saving a couple bucks? Those locksmith guys know their metal better than some kid working the register.

Pro tip: that guy at the hardware store who idles by the key cutting machine" - there's some truth there but it's not that simple. Hardware store keys can warp but only if they're the cheap nickel-plated brass blanks that some places use, not all of them. Real solid brass blanks from a good locksmith do last longer, but most home Depot or Lowes keys will hold up fine for a year or two unless you're putting them through hell.
