Just realized my uncle's 1970s CB radio stories taught me more about checking facts than any article
My uncle used to tell me about truckers on channel 19 in Oklahoma spreading rumors about fuel shortages that never happened, and how he'd call ahead to three different stops to check before believing any of it. Last month I fell down a rabbit hole about a power plant in my town that supposedly had a secret tunnel, and instead of sharing it I called the plant office. The lady there laughed and said it was a storm drain from 1962 that people photograph every spring. What I learned is that the old trucker habit of calling three sources beats sharing something in 8 seconds. Does anyone else have a family member whose old stories ended up being a better fact check method than the internet?
