Found a trick for checking if a news story is real without leaving my couch

I got tired of trying to figure out which conspiracy theories had some truth to them and which were just junk. Started using reverse image search on the photos in the articles people share. Turns out half of them are old pictures from completely different events or places. Has anyone else tried this and caught a fake story that was going around?

honestly reverse image search isn't always reliable either. i found a "fake" story once where the photo was actually real, just from a different angle of the same event.

Three times out of five those reverse searches just give you a bunch of vaguely similar looking images anyway. Plus a lot of news sites strip metadata from photos before they even go live. So I would not lose sleep over it, the whole "fake" panic gets way overblown most of the time.
