Appreciation post for the old guy who called out a bad weld on a bridge beam last Tuesday

I was on site in Columbus helping with a pedestrian bridge install and this retired ironworker just walks up and points at a gusset plate. He said 'that's gonna crack within 6 months' and showed me the slag inclusion. Foreman ignored him but I checked later with a dye penetrant kit and sure enough he was right. How often do you guys actually trust random bystanders who stop and give advice on job sites?

Man I've learned the hard way that those old timers are almost always worth listening to. They've seen so many failures that they can smell a bad weld from 50 feet away.

Totally agree, that "smell a bad weld from 50 feet away" line is spot on, I once ignored an old guy's warning and ended up re-doing the whole job.
