Why does nobody talk about how wrong I was finishing broom driveway concrete

I spent 15 years doing broom finish on driveways always going side to side across the slab. Then last month a old timer on a job in Charlotte asked me why I was making it harder on myself. He said broom with the fall not across it so water flows with the grain not against it. I felt like an idiot but my next driveway came out way smoother. Anybody else have that moment where a simple switch made you rethink everything?

Doesn't the water just pool against the house if you go with the fall?

That's a good question actually, but going with the fall doesn't mean water heads toward the house if the slab is sloped away from it like it should be. The old timer's point is that when you broom across the fall, the little ridges act like a dam and trap water against the grain. Going with the fall lets everything run off naturally instead of fighting your own work. I had a similar moment a few years back when someone told me to wet the concrete just a little less before finishing. Made a world of difference in how clean the broom lines came out, no more smearing or dragging.
