Slab edge cracking made me switch my mix design after 5 years

Last month I was pouring a 40 foot driveway in Austin and the edges kept spalling during the bull float. I always used the same 5 bag mix my mentor taught me back in 2018. A younger guy on the crew suggested adding extra fines and a touch more water reducer. I argued with him for ten minutes until he showed me a photo from a job he did in Dallas with zero cracks. Tried his ratio on a small walkway the next week, edges came out clean. Now I'm wondering if my old method only worked on cooler days, anyone else adjust their mix for Texas heat?
