Old timer told me to wet the subgrade, I thought he was crazy

Back in March on a job near Omaha, this 30 year finisher named Dale kept telling me to soak the dirt before we poured. I figured it was just extra work, so I skipped it on the first slab. Next morning the edges curled bad and we had to grind down 200 square feet of that suck. Second pour I did it his way, bone dry and flat as glass. Has anyone else had a guy's old school trick save them from a redo?
