Blew $180 on a mag float and laser screed rental for a 40x60 slab, and I was wrong to doubt it
I have been finishing concrete for 14 years and always figured a straightedge and a good eye was all a guy needed for flatwork. Last month I had a 40x60 shop slab out in Cheyenne and the GC would not stop bugging me about FF numbers, so I broke down and rented a laser screed for $180 for the day plus a mag float. I figured I would hate the thing and go back to my old way the next pour. Turns out the floor came out so flat my 10 foot straightedge showed maybe a 1/16 gap at worst, and I did not have to chase low spots with a grinder after the fact like I usually do. Saved me probably 4 hours of finishing time and two bags of patch. The part that really got me was my back did not hurt the next morning for the first time in years. I still think these tools are overpriced for small jobs but for anything over 30 yards I am renting again. Anybody else switched over for bigger pours, or am I late to this party?
