Unpopular opinion: the label maker at a client's office in Boise taught me more about cable labeling than any guide
I was doing a network cleanup at a dental office there last month and their office manager had a $30 label maker on her desk. She said they tag every cable at both ends with the room and jack number, and I saw zero mystery wires in that closet. Do you all label both ends or just the patch panel side?
Both ends here, mostly because I've spent way too much time playing detective with mystery cables and lost every single time. Tagging both ends is cheap insurance against my own future forgetfulness.
Ever play the game where you trace a cable and end up unplugging something important just to see what dies? That's basically my life with cable management. I keep telling myself I'll label things right away, then I get distracted and three months later I'm staring at a nest of identical black cords like it's a riddle I'm supposed to solve. Andrew's right that tagging both ends is cheap, but the real trick is doing it before the cords disappear behind the desk forever. My label maker is somewhere in that mess too, which feels like a sick joke. One of these days I'll learn.
