Pulled 3 drives that tested clean with SMART and still had bad sectors, switched my bench tool and never looked back
For two months I ran every client drive through the drive maker's own diag first because it was free and fast. Out of 40 drives in that stretch, 3 passed the short test, passed SMART, and then failed a full surface scan on my bench with actual bad sectors. The maker tool only reads its own error log, it never writes and verifies every sector, so a dying drive with a lazy controller sails right through. I switched to a free tool that does a full read and write verify on every sector, yes it takes 6 hours on a 2TB spinner, and it caught all 3 of those drives on the first pass. Now I just tell clients the drive maker test is a smoke alarm with the battery pulled out. What's your go to for confirming a drive is actually healthy before you trust it with a client's data?
