PSA: A tiny static shock ruined a GPU and my rep. Are anti-static steps worth it?
I was fixing a gaming rig last month for a simple RAM upgrade and didn't use my anti-static wrist strap, thinking it was quick. While handling the GPU, I felt a tiny shock from my finger to the board. The system wouldn't post after that, and I found the graphics card was fried. Some techs in my shop say not using static protection is asking for trouble, calling it a silent killer. Others argue that in most cases, static isn't a big deal and they work without precautions all the time. This mistake cost me money for the part and hurt my reputation with the client. I'm now debating whether to always use anti-static gear or only for sensitive jobs. What do you all think? Is grounding yourself a must, or just extra hassle?

Funny enough, I used to skip static protection all the time. Thought it was unnecessary for quick fixes. Then a small shock killed a hard drive for me. That incident made me change my mind completely. Now I always use a wrist strap, even for RAM upgrades. Your story is a perfect example of why it's worth the extra minute.

Absolutely. I fried a motherboard once by not grounding myself. It was during a CPU swap, and I thought it would be fine. The board just died, no warning. Now I use an antistatic mat every time, even for quick checks. Lost a good board over a stupid mistake.
