Pro tip: swapping a dying CMOS battery fixed a clock issue I'd been blaming on Windows updates
Had a client machine here in Boise that kept losing its date and time every time it got unplugged, and I spent way too long chasing Windows update problems that weren't there. On a hunch I pulled the case open and checked the coin cell with my multimeter. It read 1.9 volts when it should be right around 3. Dropped in a fresh CR2032 for about 90 cents and the time has held steady for 3 weeks now. What got me is the machine booted fine otherwise, so I kept skipping the simple stuff and running sfc scans instead. Lesson for me is to check the little hardware things first before I go digging through software. Anyone got a good trick for testing board voltage without yanking the whole thing apart?
