Pro tip: a $9 tube of thermal paste fixed a client's "dying" laptop in 20 minutes
Client brought in a 4 year old Dell that was hitting 98C and shutting down under any kind of load. He was ready to buy a new one because two other shops told him the CPU was on its way out. I pulled the heatsink, and the paste had turned into chalky gray dust, so I cleaned it with iso and Arctic MX-4 went on. Idle dropped from 71C to 44C and the fan stopped screaming during a 10 minute stress test. Anyone else seeing way more of these now that people are keeping laptops twice as long?
