Dust build up in an old school library server room

Went to swap out a failing NAS at a middle school library yesterday and the server room had no air filter on the intake vent. The drives were caked in a solid layer of dust, probably three years of buildup. How often do you guys actually check the HVAC setup before blaming hardware failure?

Read a post last week where a school IT guy said dust killed three switches before they checked the vents.
