Update on our library's rule about power washer deposits

We used to just ask for a driver's license as a deposit, but after a guy in Springfield brought back a pressure washer clogged with concrete dust last fall, we now require a $75 cash deposit that you only get back after we inspect the tool, which honestly weeds out the careless people pretty fast, so has anyone else had to get strict like that?

Seen this same thing happen with rental cars and carpet cleaners.

Ever think about just charging a cleaning fee instead? A deposit might stop some people, but a clear fee for messes like concrete dust makes the cost their problem. Then you're not stuck holding cash, just billing for the actual hassle.
