The insurance stat that flipped me on tool libraries
I always figured shared tools would get stolen or wrecked within a year. Then I read the 2023 report from the West Philly Tool Library, they only lost 3% of inventory annually to theft or damage, while individual owners reported double that in breakage alone. How do you all handle the loss rate in your own libraries, or is it just accepted as part of the deal?

That 3% stat is wild, and honestly it makes me feel better about the time I dropped a circular saw off a ladder. My own garage is basically a museum of broken tools I bought twice because the first one exploded in my hands. I think the real trick is that nobody has a personal stake in wrecking a shared thing, but when it's yours, you push it harder and then get mad at yourself. Our little neighborhood library just eats the loss and calls it a donation to the learning process. Plus, we found that putting a big sign up that says "you break it, you bring the replacement part" cuts down on the reckless stuff a lot. I'd rather lose a drill bit to someone's dumb idea than to my own stubbornness any day.
