That moment I realized I was an idiot with the orbital sander

So I've been borrowing the library's orbital sander every other weekend for like a year, sanding down old dressers and tables. Last Saturday I grabbed it for a tabletop project and the guy running the desk asked if I wanted a dust bag for it. I said nah, I thought the vacuum attachment was enough. He looked at me weird and said the sander has a built-in brake you're supposed to engage before you set it down, otherwise the pad keeps spinning and gouges the surface. I had no clue that was a thing, I'd just let it sit there and wondered why my finished pieces had swirl marks in random spots. Anyone else find out about a tool feature way later than they should've? What else am I missing with the stuff in the cabinet?

Found out my drill has a clutch setting after stripping 30 screws.
